According to the Mar Saba letter, the Secret Gospel of Mark contains two sections not included in the public Gospel of Mark: 1v:23–2r:11, and 2r:14–16. The first section, to be located immediately after Mark 10:34, recounts the story of the raising of the νεανίσκος (“youth”) of Bethany. At the request of the sister of the νεανίσκος, Jesus raised the youth from the tomb. The youth, who loved Jesus, is then taught “the mystery of the kingdom of God.” The second section, to be located within Mark 10:46, describes Jesus refusing to accept three women, including the sister and the mother of the νεανίσκος.

Clement specifies only two relatively brief sections added to public Mark to produce Secret Mark. It may be the case, then, that Secret Mark is only slightly longer than public Mark. When Mark died, Clement continues, he left the Secret Gospel to the care of the church at Alexandria, ὅπου εἰσέτι νῦν ἀσφαλῶς εὖ μάλα τηρεῖται· ἀναγινωσκόμενον πρὸς αὐτοὺς μόνους τοὺς μυουμένους τὰ μεγάλα μυστήρια (“where even now it is very carefully guarded, being read only to those being initiated into the great mysteries,” 1v:1–2).
